PH boxer Jack “the Assassin” Asis stopped Argentinian in 3

TOOWOOMBA-based Jack “The Assassin” Asis connected with a snappy left hook that almost appeared like to jab to send Argentinian Jose

Saez reeling groggily backwards with his arms down in the third of a 10-rounder at Toowoomba’s Rumours International on Saturday, June 8.

The referee decided it was enough, stopped the fight and declared Asis winner by TKO at 19 seconds into the third round.

It was the Filipino import’s eighth straight victory in Australia in as many starts. His trainer-manager Brendon Smith said he was now looking forward to a hunt for a world title shot for Asis.

The Filipino shot from his corner in the first round with both barrels firing. He cornered Saez, pummeled the Argentinian across the ring, and sent him to the canvas for a mandatory eight-count.

He continued his relentless attack in the second round, but Saez stunned Asis with a hard right-cross to get into the game.

The Argentinian was clearly outclassed in the third before the referee saved him from further punishment.

The Asis v Saez fight was the undercard of a main event pitting hometown kid Les Sherrington against Paraguay’s middleweight champion Jorge Gomez Perez.

Sherrington flattened Perez in the first round.

Other results were: Josh Webb by tko over Graham Blay, in 2. Chris George by tko over Dean Cambridge, 1. Darren Askew decisioned Mark Ramirez, 3. Will Young decisioned James Kinsella, 3.

Meantime, Smith announced that the World Boxing Council has approved a challenge by Asis for the Asia Continental super-featherweight title in September or October this year.

Smith said the search was now on for an opponent. An offer was made to Sydney-based Mohammed Elomar, who has been beaten only once in 20 fights and has recorded nine wins by knockout of his 19 victories. He comes off an impressive decision over Japan’s Takamori Akita.

Elomar is trained by well-known Sydney trainer Billy Hussein.
