Sydney University Handball Club will host the 2013 Oceania Qualifying matches for the Super Globe Handball Championship, which is to be held sometime in August or September this year. The Super Globe Tournamnt is the World Cup of handball clubs and is endorsd by the International Handball Federation or IHF.
Sydney University HC was the first Australian club side to represent the Oceania region at the 2012 IHF Super Globe in Doha, Qatar and will defend their Oceania Club Champion title.
The team will host New Zealand club, Auckland Region Handball, with the winning side to take the Oceania position at the 2013 IHF Super Globe tournament in August/September this year.
Last year was a landmark year for the Sydney University Handball Club, winning the NSW State League and representing the Oceania region at the IHF Super Globe.
At the 2012 Super Globe , Sydney Univerity HC played against German Champions THW Kiel, Saudi Arabian Champions Mudhar and local teams El Jaish and Al Sadd which were brimming with loaned players fresh from the London Olympics. Sydney Uni HC did not come away with a win, but through determined team play they managed to obtain the best results of any Oceanic team to date.
The Sydney Uni HC team comprises of a number of current Australian national team players with a mixture of international students and expats rounding out the side. Many of the players have returned after the previous years’ Super Globe campaign and are looking to build on the previous years’ results. The Auckland Handball Club brings with it a number of New Zealand national team representatives and are hoping to take their first Oceania Club Championship title.
The qualification process will consist of two matches between Sydney Uni HC and Auckland RH to be held at the Sports Halls at Sydney Olympic Park. The first match will be held at 6:30PM on the 18th of May with the second match as 12:30PM on the 19th of May.
Sydney Uni HC is one of Australia’s leading handball clubs. Its men and women teams consist of numerous Australian national team members as well as international students and expats.
