Not very well-known to the Sydney concert goers is a pop rock performer/songwriter and Philippines clean air campaigner and Chairman of Earthday Jam Foundation in the Philippines, by the name of Lou Bonnevie.
She caught our attention because she is not only a seasoned performer but she also uses her talent to inspire and encourage our “kababayans” to keep the environment and surroundings clean. She is a singer with a cause. What a noteworthy aspiration she has, especially in a country where there is a need for people to be more conscious of cleaning and caring for the environment.
Maria Lourdes Bonnevie, better known by her stage name Lou Bonnevie, is a well-known Filipina pop rock musicians. She began her career in 1984 and has released several albums since then. A cousin of the popular actress, Dina Bonnevie, Lou is of French and Spanish descent. Her father, whose ancestors were from France, migrated to Pasacao, Camarines Sur, Bicol. Her mother who is of Filipino-Spanish lineage comes from Manila.
Lou showed her flair for music at a very early age, singing in family gatherings and school events. She perfected her musical skills in playing the guitar and composing songs during her early schooling in Bicol. When her family moved to Manila in the 1980’s, Lou was ready to perform professionally in small clubs and hotels. Because of her hazel and captivating eyes, she was nicknamed “Twinkle” when she was younger.
Lou is not only a professional singer, she is also a songwriter. Her first professional composition was a song entitled “Nawawalang Karapatan” (A Song Abhorring Abortion) which became a finalist in a Children’s Rights competition.
In 1984, Lou launched her musical career via a concert entitled “Next in Line”. Since then, she has performed with top Filipino artists both in the Philippines and abroad. Her repertoire consists of her original composition and adaptations of soul, retro, rock & roll, folk and blues.
Sydney concert goers will have a chance to watch this very talented performer’s live concert on the 17th October at the Mounties Showroom at 7:30 pm. She will also have smaller shows in Pabico Club 55, Mt. Druitt on the 16th & 18th October and in Mina’s Restaurant, Campbelltown on 23rd & 24th October. For tickets, please ring Nita on 0437 210 007
