ANTIQUE, Philippines – Some 206 kilos of trash which littered the shoreline of Sitio Bany-banay, Barangay San Pedro, this Municipality were collected during the June 2 coastal cleanup.

The coastal clean-up was conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as a highlight of the opening of the observance of Environment Month, with national government agency-partners Philippine Information Agency, Department of Interior and Local Government, National Food Authority, National Irrigation Administration, Coast Guard, among others joining the activity.

According to Russel Rizardo, committee chairman for coastal cleanup, the participating government agencies removed trash from the said barangay’s shoreline.

OIC, Provincial Environment and Natural Resouces Officer Ruel L. delos Reyes  said in a PIA interview that the cleanup activity is to raise awareness about the harm and negative impact of the trash to the marine and coastal environment.

Reyes said that last year, the coastal cleanup activity was conducted in Barangay Malandog, Hamtic, Antique.

Plastics, bottles, cigarette butts, Styrofoam cups, among others were littering on the shoreline.

According to Barangay Captain Leodoro C. Redano some of the people in his barangay are hard-headed even if they are reminded not to scatter their garbage at the shoreline.

The PENRO Antique head said that their office is sustaining the conduct of coastal cleanup and information drive in order to educate the public about the problem of pollution along the coastlines.
