The Flavours of Auburn Festival on Saturday 26 October will tantalize your tastebuds with extraordinary dishes such as camel curry, Turkish borek, Ethiopian bread and exotic spice blends.
Auburn is the place to be when it comes to sampling and enjoying dishes from all over the world. With people from more than 120 different cultural backgrounds living in the area, there is an amazing amount of culinary diversity, which is why Auburn City Council and the Auburn Small Community Organisation Network are hosting The Flavours of Auburn Festival at the Auburn Centre for Community on Saturday 26 October 2013.
For only $10 you will be able to choose two tasters available from the many food stalls at the festival. Not only will there be food from Somalia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, India, Ethiopia, Turkey and the Philippines, but there will also be music and dance performances as well.
To celebrate the fifth Flavours of Auburn event, a community cookbook has been developed featuring the favourite recipes from the past five years. The cookbook is a celebration of cultural diversity and explores the history and importance of each recipe. This is your chance to learn the secrets of some amazing dishes as well as taste the dishes featured in the cookbook first hand.
Cookbooks are available for pre-purchase online or available for purchase on the day. The cookbook will give people from all over Sydney the opportunity to prepare exotic dishes and aromatic spices such as berbere (a blend of red chilli, black pepper, garlic, ginger and Spanish onions). The cookbook also includes healthy and fast recipe alternatives to promote good eating habits
You can also register for a free walking food tour and experience the undiscovered tastes of Auburn. There will be two food tours of Auburn, at 10am and 2pm. The walking tours will take shoppers into a range of stores offering ingredients and delicacies usually only found in Asia and the Arabic world. The tours will be led by specialists who will introduce ingredients, spices, herbs and produce to create delicious dishes to impress family and friends.
“The focus of Flavours of Auburn is the culinary culture and heritage of small and emerging communities, and on food that you can’t find easily in restaurants,” said Mayor of Auburn, Ned Attie. “This is why this event is a must for adventurous food lovers throughout Sydney. So come along, try something different and pick up a copy of the cookbook while you’re there.”
The event is part of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Month and has been funded with assistance from Auburn City Council’s Healthy Communities Initiative.
