The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has urged President Benigno Aquino to sign into law the amended Animal Welfare Act.
The bill amends Republic Act No. 8485 also known as “An Act to Promote Animal Welfare in the Philippines” or “The Animal Welfare Act of 1998.”
It seeks steeper penalties pm animal welfare offenses penalizing violators of the law with maximum of two years imprisonment and fine not exceeding P100,000 if the maltreated or neglected animal dies.
On the other hand, if the animal survives but suffers from severe injuries, violators will be imprisoned for a year and six months and may face a fine worth P50,000.
The strong cry to this call came after the recent video that went viral in social networking sites where three girls are seen stomping on a puppy until it died.
Several netizens and pet lovers were outraged with the act. The three girls were eventually known as Filipinas and are already in custody of authorities.
