SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 16 : Fairfield City Council - Lunar New Year 2019 on February 16, 2019 in Sydney, Australia.

Cabramatta Lunar Festival is postponed

At a Council meeting on Monday, 3 February 2020, Fairfield City Council considered a report on its upcoming major events in light of current health warnings and advisories relating to Coronavirus – the first major event being Cabramatta Lunar New Year, scheduled for this weekend, 8-9 February 2020.

Fairfield City Council, in consultation with the local business community, performers and event sponsors, has made the decision to postpone its upcoming major event – the Cabramatta Lunar New Year celebrations.

The celebrations were scheduled to be held on 8-9 February. Lunar New Year is a major Council event that was expected to attract more than 10,000 people to the Cabramatta town centre.

However, due to the World Health Organisation’s emergency health warnings related to the coronavirus, and in response to concerns raised within the community, the decision was made to postpone the event indefinitely. Many other councils across Sydney, and in Queensland and Victoria have also cancelled or postponed their Lunar New Year celebrations.

The decision was made at a special extraordinary council meeting on Monday, 3 February and Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the decision was a difficult one for the Council to make.

“This is a decision that has not been made lightly. We know how important this event is for our local community but their safety and wellbeing is more important,” Mayor Frank Carbone said.

“Council has made this decision in consultation with the local business community, performers and event sponsors. We will always put the safety and wellbeing of our community first, and we look forward to a bigger and better celebration in the future,” he said.
