ASEAN senior information officials meet in Bacolod today

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Around 50 delegates from the ten Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States will join the ASEAN SOMRI (Senior Officials Responsible for Information) meeting at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City today.
The 15th Meeting of the ASEAN SOMRI will run for two days, March 22 – 23.
Undersecretary Noel George Puyat of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) said that Surveys on ASEAN Community Building Effort showed that while 81% of ASEAN citizens have heard of ASEAN, only 24% have a basic understanding of what it isand its purpose for existence.
The meeting in Bacolod aims to address the said concern as it will focus on strategies to intensify promotion of awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the ASEAN Community.
The information officials will also tackle policy recommendations and work programsto strengthen the information and media sectors of the ASEAN Member States.
Likewise, they will also discuss the progress of the implementation of its work programs and related activities, including the ASEAN Strategic Plan for Information and Media ‎2016-2025.
ASEAN is marking its 50th year with the Philippines as the host Member State.
The senior information officials are also tasked to firm up joint activities of the ASEAN information sector for the commemoration of the 50th Founding Anniversary of ASEAN.
