The Catholic Church reminds the Filipinos to reflect instead of doing some recreational activities during the Holy Week break.

In the Philippines, work in public and private companies are suspended on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to commemorate Jesus Christ’s passion and death.

Some people also use this opportunity to go on vacation and head to their favorite travel destinations.

Former Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz encourage the faithful to do some self-reflection, go to confession, pray and attend some of the Church’s activities during Holy Week like Stations of the Cross, Visita Iglesia, and Holy Masses instead.

Furthermore, the Church also does not tolerate self-flagellation and crucifixion as acts of penitence during Holy Week.

The former archbishop sees it as over-Christian; one does not have to do these acts to show their real sacrifice and atonement of their sins.

He also pointed out that these acts, particularly the self-crucifixion has become a yearly tourist attraction in Pampanga.

Sadly, the intention of penance and sacrifice is being disregarded as some use this as venue for business and profit where small stores and other means for people to earn are being set-up on the location.

Cruz explained that Jesus Christ already spilt his own blood and allowed himself to die on the cross to redeem us from our sins.
