Cycling For A Better Life

A group of likeminded cyclists who are mostly of Filipino descent have banded themselves into a formidable group of athletes called The Sydney Patriots Cycling Team (SPCT).

Although the Patriots only started in mid-August 2012, they were able to attain 3 podium finishes during their last competition, Colnago Cup at Eastern Creek Raceway Sydney on 17 February 2013.

Emman Pineda achieved 3rd place in the B Grade Division. Lino Regala attained 4th place in the D Grade Division. Lastly, Homer Martillano clinched the 1st place in the D Grade Division.

Regular weekly rides are held on Saturdays at M7 Cycleway. The team meets at Rooty Hill between 6.30am during summer and 7:00am in winter. On Sundays, they race at Eastern Creek Raceway with the Waratahs Vets.

The SPCT consists of all levels of riders. With their mission statement: “when we ride, we ride as one” shows respect and support for each other and unity amongst the team members.

Their vision is to inspire individuals to have a healthy lifestyle through cycling and to enable them to gain confidence to compete in national and international competitions.

‘Patriots’, is a name inspired by the American Civil War revolutionaries. The revolutionaries rebelled against their ruling empire for their freedom of voice in the same way that the team wants to transform their vices into healthy living. Furthermore, they call themselves Sydney Patriots to encourage multicultural diversity within their team.

Three of its members pride themselves to have been part of the Marlboro Tour and compete with professional cyclists, perennial contenders and are winners of weekly local “criterium” races and triathletes back in the Philippines in ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Oscar Cayabyab was a champion in ’70s. Lino Regala took part in the Marlboro Tour in the ’80s. Lastly, Emman Pineda of Olongapo City represented the Team Elixir in Padyak Pinoy Veterans in the mid ’90s.

These members help motivate and inspire others to strive more to achieve their goals in gaining healthier lifestyles through their experience and knowledge.

The Sydney Patriots Cycling Team invites everyone whether professionals or beginners to join them on their journey cycling for a better life.

The team has a facebook page, wherein members may share their thoughts and ideas as well as upcoming events. For any enquiries please call Coach Michael Cabreros on 0481 252 842.
