MANILA, Philippines – During today’s volatile and uncertain times, ASEAN’s importance in building a secure community has never been more paramount. Under the ASEAN Security Community Plan of Action (ASC), ASEAN Member States engage in bilateral cooperation with one another while recognizing the sovereign rights of the Member States to pursue their individual foreign policies and defense arrangements.
But how should ASEAN address today’s security challenges? How do ASEAN Member States like the Philippines share the responsibility for strengthening peace, stability, and security of the region?
The 1st ASEAN 2017 Dialogue “One ASEAN, Safer Together” to be held today, 16 June 2017, will address these questions. During the online webinar and forum session, speakers will discuss regional security, cyber-security, non-traditional security in the context of ASEAN, as well as other benefits and challenges of ASEAN membership.
The dialogue panelists include: Hellen de la Vega, Assistant Secretary, Office of ASEAN Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA); Cardozo Luna*, Undersecretary, Department of National Defense; Atty. Rodolfo Salalima, Secretary, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT); Raymund Liboro, Privacy Commissioner and Chairman, National Privacy Commission; Eduardo Gongona*, Director, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and George Barcelon*, President, Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PCCI). The ASEAN 2017 Dialogues is a three-part dialogue series that aims increase understanding and awareness of ASEAN’s three pillars: Political-Security, Economic, and Socio-Cultural.
