QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Southern Leyte will soon start implementing the biggest farm-to-market sub-project in Eastern Visayas under the Department of Agriculture’s Philippine Rural Development Project.
The new road will be 19.4 km long, and will extend across 11 barangays. The P232 million-worth road renovation sub-project will benefit at least 12,000 residents from Barangay San Roque to Barangay Bahay.
According to Leo P. Cañeda, regional executive director of the DA-Regional Field Office 8, the soon-to-be-implemented farm-to-market (FMR) sub-project in Liloan is the biggest FMR sub-project in the region in terms of fund allocation.
The proposed sub-project has now been issued a No Objection Letter from the World Bank. This letter gives clearance for the local government unit to proceed with the procurement process of the proposed sub-project.
In a recent consultation with meeting with project affected persons, Director Cañeda and other officials had the chance to traverse the entire stretch of the proposed FMR.
The team said they saw the covered area’s potential for tourism with its pristine bodies of water and unscathed forested areas.
Another important benefit of the FMR sub-project, according to Cañeda, is the residents’ convenience in travelling from the far-flung barangays to the town proper to sell their produce.
Liloan Municipal Mayor Shirlita Y. Cong added that the sub-project will not only benefit the livelihood of the residents, but likewise promote and enhance children’s welfare and education, considering the long distance they have to travel before reaching the school.
