Ilonggo products take center stage in APEC Exhibit

ILOILO CITY, Philippines – Various Ilonggo products are being showcased in the ongoing Artisanal exhibit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit mounted at the lobby of the newly-inaugurated Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) here.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) opened the exhibition during the kick-off of the National MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) Summit 2015 held Monday, September 21, 2015.
The APEC Artisanal Exhibit gathered premier artisanal handicrafts in the city and the province of Iloilo.
The week-long promotional event aims to encourage intra-regional trade by showcasing the cultural diversity and masterful craftsmanship of artisan craft makers.
Meanwhile, part of the exhibit featured products from ‘Tinukib’, a premier pasalubong center in Iloilo.
The Tinukib pasalubong center showcases the produce of small and micro entrepreneurs from the different towns, cities and neighboring provinces in Western Visayas.
The exhibit also featured creations of Ilongga fashion designer Jaki Penalosa, who is partial in using hablon, piña and abaca which are fabrics indigenous to the province of Iloilo.
On one hand, the works of Fernando Kabigting, featured resident artist at the 2015 APEC Summit here, are also displayed in the exhibition.
Kabigting is a celebrated Filipino artist whose body of works spans over fifty years. He is well known for his original paintings on antique wooden ‘batya, which captured Philippine life and scenery.
Kabigting is also known for his art on reclaimed wood presenting a new dimension to his artistic repertoire

Criselda Cabangon David, a happy mother of two kids, is a full-time Sociologist at the City Government of Lucena, Quezon Province. She is currently the Managing Editor of Ang Diaryo Natin Sunday News, a weekly local community newspaper in the Philippines and an active member of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.
