The Sydney-based Tagalog Association of Australia or TAA in coordination with the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney will hold the Balagtasan 2015 at Pabico Club 55 on 1 Mount Street, Mt Druitt, 1230 to 5:00 pm on 30 August 2015
Balagtasan is traditional poetic joust between acknowledged kings and queens of poetic declamation debating on the pros and con of an issue. This is a form of stage presentation named after the Philippines’ foremost Tagalog poet and hero Francisco Balagtas.
TAA is inviting the public to this lunch cum stage presentation for $20 admission which includes a buffet lunch.
This will be the second Balagtasan tournament sponsored by TAA, after the first one bein held last year at the Masonic Centre in Blacktown.
On its heyday, Balagtasan has a huge followings first during the zarzuela (stage plays) era in the Philippines and later on during the onset of radio communications in the Philippines.
For a period, there were declared Hari at Reyna ng Balagtasan (King and Queen of Balagtasan) who had their own fan base just like today’s record and TV performers. These masters and experts of poetical jousts enjoy not only public recognition but commercial support from Manila commercial companies.
In the Philippines, Balagtasan enjoyed huge community support most especially in the Central Lun provinces where Tagalog was the lingua franca of the people.
In this coming Balagtasan joust, organisers have decided to tackle the light hearted issue of “Which is better individual attribute, thin or fat?”.
