Lifetime citations for one-time nurse of Philippine guerillas during WW II Irene Kelly who passed away at 90 in Sydney recently, present Philippine Consul General in Sydney Anne Jalando-on Louis and internationally renown professor on nursing and clinical experience Prof. Violeta Lopez capped the dozen or so awards recognizing Philippine nurses in Australia for the past three decades during “A Tribute to Nursing” gala night at the Tivoli Room of the Rooty Hill RSL Clup last Sunday 23 March.
Philippine Consul General Jalando-on Louis herself was a registered nurse and clinical instructor in Bacolod City , before embarking on a career as diplomat in 1996.
Mrs Ella Martirez, the founding president of the Philippine Nurses Association of Australia, Inc (PNAA) said ,”Our nurse are all eligible for the various categories and criteria of the awards. Research Education, Nursing Practice, Student Performance Area and Membership and Lifetime Service.
Mrs Martirez added, “We are all winners.”
In her message in the event’s souvenir program, Philippine Ambassador to Australia Ms Belen Anota commended the organiser of the event Adhika, Inc. “for continuously and successfully raising awareness around Australia through the media by highlighting important developments, and events and issues of importance to the Filipino people.”
Those who received Awards for Excellence in Nursing Practice in respective areas of commendations were: Nelley Detera Tiga – Aged care and Administration; Roel Hernandez – Renal Specialist/Nephrology; Serge Junonong – Anesthetics; Veronica A;cantara – Surgical Nursing and Administration’ Milagros Lopez – Education and Clinical Teaching’
Cynthia Duran – Paediatrics and obstetrics; Myrna Bulanadi – Disability and Aged Care; Dr Cindy Leigh – Education and Research; Fely Perez – Mental health; Edna Thompson – Surgical Nursing; Prescilla luzon – Leadership and Administration and Marites Manese – Outstanding Student Performance – Oncology and Palliative Care.
