Start of the Term of the Newly Elected Officials

The term of office of most incumbent officials has officially ended on and more than 18,000 officials elected in the May 13 midterm elections will assume office starting June 30.

On Monday, July 1, the newly elected officials can start reporting for work.

Elected local officials will serve a three-year term or until 2016, while the elected senators will stay in office for the next six years.

Voted senators who will start their duty as legislators in the Upper House of the Philippine Congress are: Grace Poe-Llamanzares, Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, Nancy Binay, Edgardo Angara, Paolo Benigno Aquino, Aquilino Pimentel III, Antonio Trillanes IV, Cynthia Villlar, JV Ejercito, and Gregorio Honosan.

Meanwhile, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said that they are still reviewing who among the local officials have filed complete Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCEs), a requirement before they assume office.

Comelec had a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Interior and Local Government to bar non-compliant local official from holding office.

Brillantes said that the commission would start next week auditing the campaign contributions and expenditures declared by the candidates in their SOCEs with the help of the National Citizen’s Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
