The World Health Organisation’s World No Tobacco Day aims to raise awareness of the health risks associate with tobacco use and highlighting the need to implement effective strategies to reduce smoking..

“The effects  of smoking can lead to a number of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory illnesses,” Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone said.

“Smoking can also potentially harm those close to you. Passive smoking is just as harmful as direct smoking. It can cause serious health problems in infants and children because of their smaller airways and immune systems.’

“I encourage al smokers to take the step and kick the habit. It can b hard to quit smoking, but the long term benefits and cost saving is invaluable.

Council s a strong advocate for providing smoke free areas throughout the city. In 2006, Fairfield City Council introduced the Puff Free Park Policy, whereby smoke free zones apply at all of Council’s sporting fields, adjoining car park,  and within 10metres od playground equipment in public parks.
