MANILA, Philippines – An official of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) raised alarmed over the proliferation of internet child porn operation in the country.
Fr. Conegundo Garganta of the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Youth said the government must do everything to curb child abuse and cybersex crime in the Philippines.
“By all means DepEd (Department of Education) must revoke the permit to such school. The offense is a grave threat to the safety of minors,” Garganta said.
According to the CBCP, the priest also urged the Education department to revoke the permit of the Mountaintop Christian Academy if proven that it allowed cybersex to operate inside the school.
This week, authorities from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested nine people following a raid in said school believed to be used for cybersex operations.
They also confiscated 50 computers and external drives containing adult and child pornographic materials that suspects uploaded online.
Meanwhile, Garganta called on the DepEd to immediately address the issue so it will not happen again in other schools.
“Random checking of schools means skipping who might actually be on this. DepEd should have a comprehensive plan to address such issue. Parents and students must be vigilant too,” he added.
